You have the flash drive set up for write back cacheing and you are not
forcing a cache flush before removing it. Windows should give you an error
message when you do this, but it doesn't always happen. Next time click on
the 'safely remove hardware' icon in the notification area (next to the
clock), click on the flash drive and select 'Stop'. This will force a flush
of the cache and then you can remove the drive.
Alternatively, next time the drive is inserted, right click 'My Computer'
and select 'Manage'. Then select 'drive management' in the left pane
(second from bottom option). Now look for the flash drive in the right pane
and right click on the grey bit to the left of the actual partition. Select
'Properties' and then the 'policies' tab. Select the 'optimise for fast
removal' (words may not be precise) and then OK your way out. It should now
be possible to remove the flash stick without having to stop it first.
