Vista latest ?

Hi there ,What is the latest on Vista ?
Does it really hog resources? Is 1GB DDR Ram enough ?
Does it improve on XP Pro ?
Is it really better or do I remove it from my new laptop and install
XP?

Before installing winxp on a laptop that was supplied with vista first check
that winxp drivers are avilable for that specific model - kinda important,
you could end up with a paperweight
Removing the preinstalled o/s may invalidate any warranty/support

I recently purchased a Dell Vostro, not a particularl high end cpu,
vid.onboard, but it has 2gb ram I was pleasantly surprised by its
performance. The only issue I have is with file copying over the network,
but that is a known bug

It has a nigher need for RAM than previous OS versions. But this has always been the case
for MS Windows. 1GB is the bare minimum and 2GB would be better.

First you would have to check if the all the various hardware has WinXP drivers. Then you
would need to purchase WinXP assuming the hardware is supported by WinXP.

Actually the new machine was supposed to have Win XP Pro loaded but of
course-----I ended up with Vista.
The agent has aggreed to reload it with the XP if I want it.
So tomorrow I will place it in their hands and therafter it is their
problem!!

You'll get different viewpoints from different people. Here's mine:

No. But be aware that every new operating system does more than its
predecessor, and therefore needs a more powerful computer.

Whether with Vista, XP, or any other version of Windows, how much RAM
you need for good performance is *not* a one-size-fits-all situation.
You get good performance if the amount of RAM you have keeps you from
using the page file, and that depends on what apps you run.

That said, *most* people using a range of common business applications
under Vista should probably have 2GB. That's the number I normally
recommend to everyone, unless they run particularly memory-hungry
apps, in which I'd recommend more. I don't recommend using only 1GB.

You have to make you own decisions about things like that. But I'll
make three comments:

1. Especially with a newer laptop, you may very well find that XP
drivers for all your laptop hardware are not available, and the choice
of XP is not open to you.

2. You may very well find that doing what you suggest will be
considered by your manufacturer to void the laptop's warranty.

3. To me, changing to XP is a step backward and makes no sense. In
fact, if you were to do so, I'll predict that it will only be a matter
of time until you reinstall Vista, because you will want support for
new applications or hardware that isn't supported in XP.

I've been running Vista since RTM in November 2006. I've had no
problems at all, and I'm very happy with it.

Installing a different OS is not a causative factor in voiding a warranty. At most, the
manufacturer/vendor may refuse support of the different OS that wasn't installed by them.

It shouldn't be, but unfortunately it sometimes is. Although I haven't
had the experience personally, I've seen numerous reports of this
happening to others.

What is going on with Vista 64bit drivers? I am still hearing that thare is
too few drivers. Vista64 is what I want. Does Microsoft have a program
that will test your system to see if the software and hardware can work with
Vista64?
