Password Request - New

Last night, a dialog box appeared that indicated that Windows detected a
corrupt file, and that I should run the CHKDSK utility. I either clicked OK,
and the system started re-booting, or I may have restarted the computer after
clicking OK. Regardless, after a series of delete and repair messages, the
logon screen showed up, but regardless of which icon I now click on, it now
requests a password. We never established any passwords since this is our
home computer, and we have been using it for three or four years. At this
point, we are totally locked out of our computer. How do we eliminate the
password requirement?

IF you cannot remember any password , try just pressing enter :
may/may not help .

There is a boot CD you can burn to reset the password. After that, boot to
Safe Mode, to see if you can get in with the default 'administrator'
account, and a blank password.

First you have to logon to the Administrator account and that depends on
what
version of XP you have installed.

For Home Edition, boot into safe mode and then click on Administrator--it
should have a blank password.

For Pro, hit the Ctrl-alt-del key combo twice at the Welcome screen to bring
up the Administrator account--also a blank password.

Once signed in, go to control panel, User Accounts, and get rid of the
password.

I have booted up in Safe Mode and an administrator icon appears. However, it
also now requires a password, and if I just hit enter on any of the icons, a
dialog box appears that says something like "The system cannot log me on
because the domain Kitchen is not available". Any other suggestions?

Ron,

My laptop just starting experiencing the same thing as of last night. The
exact message is "System Cannot Log You on now Because the Domain <LAPTOP> is
not available", where LAPTOP is the name of my computer. Any password
entered, and I never had to enter a password for 3 years with this laptop,
gives you this message. I am totally locked out. The only information I can
provide is that this occurred after a restart (and I don't restart often). I
am guessing, espeically after reading the same exact symptons from other
posts as well, that some sort of auto-update has done this.

I'm at a loss and frankly worried about how I am going to get the files off
of my hard drive...Searching the internet I have found a half dozen or so
people with this problem and they are all from 2008 and beyond, so it is
fairly new. ANy help is greatly appreciated.
