reboot failure from windows xp cd
Help All,

After my computer was stuck in a loop i rebooted from the Windows XP cd. I
then went to Windows updates and downloaded all the updates. I then tried to
install SP2 but was greeted with an "access denied" message. I followed
various replies posted on these fourums to remedy this but it did not work.
I then rebooted again from the cd and now i have lost access to Windows
Updates.

On the 1st occasion i have tried using a different admin account,
unistalling my Panda antivirus and i have tried to follow instructions to use
a SubInAcl file, this i am out of my depth.

On the 2nd occasion i believe i have lost a jscript.dll file but again i
have encountered confiedence problems trying to fix this.

Any ideas anyone?

Re: reboot failure from windows xp cd
I would guess from what was in your post that you ran setup and installed a
fresh copy of the system, and failed to 'activate' it yet. This would lead
to a failure to update to SP2 from the updates site, because activation is
required to do that.
To run the activation dialog, go to start/run, and type:
%SYSTEMROOT%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /A

Re: reboot failure from windows xp cd
Hi Mark,

I've typed that in but my computer would not accept the /A at the end "could
not find the specified file". I tried it without the /A and nothing happened?

Thanks

You probably missed putting a space before the /A

You can try putting the update site in your trusted zone, and/or lowering
the Security setting in the browser Options

Are you having problem to update or Activate?.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

You cannot install some updates or programs: Go to:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp
You may receive an "Error 0x80072EE2," "Error 0x80072EE7," "Error
0x80072EFD," "Error 0x80072F76," or "Error 0x80072F78" error message when you
try to use the Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941

Please copy and paste the following into a Notepad and Save it as Reg.bat on
your Desktop then double click the Reg.bat to execute it and click "YES" to
register the Required DLLs for the windows updates engine.

regsvr32 Msxml.dll
regsvr32 Msxml2.dll
regsvr32 atl.dll
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 inetcomm.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
regsvr32 cryptsvc.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
net start wuauserv

Reboot the machine and see if you will be able to get and install any updates.

Re: reboot failure from windows xp cd
Thanks I can now access updates. When i try to install sp2 I get the
following message, "sp2 setup could not backup registry key
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uni nstall\KB835409 to file
C:\Windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$\reg01610. 5:Access is denied"

You are seeing registry Permissions errors. I would try this fix:

Aaron Stebner's WebLog Solving setup errors by using the SubInACL tool to
repair file and registry permissions:
