ISASS.EXE error - password problems

On restoring the System State from a 2000Pro back up, the XP registry
became corrupted.
The comment after the backup was "unable to write to C:\Windows
\System32\config ...Reason : the handle is invalid"

System was rebooted to see if the dual boot was fixed; XP booted as
far as the blue screen then :

ISASS.EXE "When trying to rewrite a password the return state
indicates that the value provided as the current password is not
correct".
Then auto reboot

A groups search led me to the MS kb article KB 307545 which addresses
the problem - but says you must not use the given procedure if the
computer has an OEM XP installation - as mine has.

In XP Recovery Console I am asked for the administrator password. My
installation never used passwords since it was for home use.

Any experts out there can save me from a reinstallation of XP?

You may need to download boot floppies, if you can use them. Otherwise, you
need to locate your ../i386 folder on your system.

Thanks, but I am afraid that the problem is the one outlined in KB
307545
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545/en-us which is OK except for
OEM versions of XP.

I am attacking it the long way round now, by reinstalling XP on a
separate disk then pulling all my data off the old XP disk once the
system is up and running.

It may be possible to repair the registry of the original XP from the
new system, to save reloading all the hardware and programs again. I
would appreciate help with that.

There is a command line utility, REG.exe that will load the user.dat hive,
to export it as a *.reg file. You could try merging that into the new
registry. Hard to guess if it would work.
