usb 2.0 reading normal, writing slow after xp update
Hello,

weird problem accessing USB 2.0 sticks:
- reading is normal speed (about 12 mb/s)
- writing is extremly slow (about 350 kb/s instead of 8 mb/s)

This happend first after the update orgy following the original
installation of xp pro on my new computer. Directly after the
installation and before the updates the writing speed was normal. Then
I was able to fix it by deleting the usb drivers from the device
manager and rebooting.

After the most recent regular xp updates the problem is back. But this
time nothing I tried helped.

I'm sure that it's not a hardware problem:
- I tried several different sticks at different ports
- the sticks work fine at other computers (writing is even faster on
an ancient computer with only usb 1.1 ports ...)
- according to the device manager there is no problem at all.

I tried:
- Checking ms for driver updates: none
- reinstalling the chip set drivers from cd
- removing the usb drivers from the device manager and rebooting

any ideas?
need more information?

Regards,
Norbert Schmidt

Norbert

This link contains lots of general information
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Serial_Bus

Aren't read sppeeds tpically faster than write speeds. Have you checked
against the specification for the USB stick?

Hope this helps.

Sure, but on a properly working USB 2.0 system the write speed on this
stick is about 8 mb/s, while my screwed system only writes about 350
kb/s. That's less than 5%!

Even an ancient computer with just USB 1.1 ports write the stick with
about 1 mb/s. That's 3 times faster.
