Choosing Default Bullets

I am re-asking this question as it was not answered so far. Does anyone know
how to choose the default bullets? My default bullets got changed so that the
"Close Windows" "X" that normally appears in the Top Right Corner of each
window is now a box and arrows on menus are now little mouse symbols. How is
this controlled?

It is not in the "Appearance" menu and it is not a problem with the loaded
fonts. Is there supposed to be a "Bullets" subkey in my registry, and, if so,
where?
