Well, I don't know about the problems people are experiencing in trying
to set up a microphone on their system, but I can tell you that unless
you are having problems playing sound, ignore that error message when
you perform "test hardware" under the voice tab of your audio devices.
My first mistake was in performing Dell's diagnostic scan 11 days shy of
my warranty expiring. It begot a whole host of tech "suggestions" over
the course of 3 days by phone and IM and resulted in all kinds of
additional problems, not to mention bleeding ears from trying to
understand foreign accents via phone over the course of 2 hours!
Fortunately, these problems were resolved before I tried reinstalling
my operating system (which probably wouldn't have corrected anything
anyway), and while I still have error messages, everything works as
before I began on my Hell adventure. My best advice, is check your
audio for downloads (see link below) that you may need. Good luck if
you need Dell's assistance.
