Slow loading windows occassionally
I've got 'Avast' , Windows Defender and Spybot S&D loaded and running on my
PC ( XP Home SP2) . Are these ok to have loaded and running together ? I
have 2 other user accounts also (for kids-games etc) . At times some windows
wont load and have to click on them many times and sometimes takes upto 3-5
mins to open....The Desktop Icons seem to re-load often to...??...Spybot S&D
has picked up a couple of bugs and fixed them?...Avast hasnt found anything
odd.......Im just about ready to Destroy the comp and start from
scratch................

:-/ any help Greatly appreciated ..........

Re: Slow loading windows occassionally
Your problem is probably Avast doing it's daily automatic full scan. You
should be able to check this. I have AVG 7.5 and can check progress.

The solution is a simple if my presumption is correct. Start the
computer 5 minutes earlier and it will be ready to use when you need it.

Hope this helps.

Re: Slow loading windows occassionally
My brother-in-law had a PC for the kids and it too 20 minutes to come up
to working order on boot. They called me to try to fix it. We finally
reloaded it. But 20 minutes. I tried loading Nero so I would have
some way to backup to CD (no usb) and that took over 90 minutes. This
was the worst case of a PC.
But they did the same thing. The kids would turn it on in the morning
and then leave it on all day so they could play with it later.

Back to winddancer's question though. Try a lot, turn off all those
things. Search this group for "slow" in the subject. This question is
asked so often and so over talked I'm not repeating anything. But
search this and microsoft.public.windowsxp.general too. There have
been some great links to web pages that give great helpful hints on how
to locate issues on bootup and slow systems in general.

I just changed from AVG to Avast. But they are so alike, however I too
feel that Avast is hanging my PC now and then. AVG made my mail
program a bit sluggish and tags this add comment on the bottom of all
email. So damn if I do and damn if I don't story. This is all
suspect 'feelings' you understand.
