Windows XP hangs at Shutting down computer after installation of 2ndSATA drive
Hi Guys,

I installed a second SATA hard drive into my system. Was able to
install it successfully everything works except I am now not able to
shutdown my computer. I have to manually power it down. If I
disconnect the second SATA hard drive the system powers down using
shutdown. Any ideas?

Thanks

This suggestion may help. Download and install the User Profile Hive
Cleanup Service

You have a hanging program that's preventing shutdown, event viewer
would provide some answers.

Re: Windows XP hangs at Shutting down computer after installation of2
Hi,

I had already tried the user profile hive cleanup and that didnt
help. There are some errors in the even viewer but they are the same
as the ones I had before installing the new harddrive. The system not
shutting down isn't even listed.

Any other suggestions?
Thanks

Re: Windows XP hangs at Shutting down computer after installation of 2
Did you work through the suggestions in this link:
http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm

The errors in Event Viewer may have existed before but they should still
be eliminated if possible as they can obscure seeing another problem.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Try Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management,
Disk Management what does it say about the drive?

You might find HD Tune gives you a clearer picture of what is going on.
HD Tune only gives information and does not fix any problems.

Download and run it and see what it turns up.
http://www.hdtune.com/

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on the drive under Drive
letter and then double click the two page icon ( copy to Clipboard )
and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy to
Clipboard ) and copy into a further message. Make sure you do a full
surface scan with HD Tune.

Re: Windows XP hangs at Shutting down computer after installation of2
Hi ,

I tried the suggestions that you listed and I didnt get anywhere. I
ended up taking the machine in to store where I purchased the hard
drive. There technician spent several hours on it and couldnt figure
out what the problem was. When they switched the hard drive for a
SATA Seagate 320GB that they had laying around that worked fine.
Using another Westen Digital 500GB caused the same issue. In the end
they took the Western Digital harddrive back, so I'm going to wait
till a SATA Seagate 500GB is on special somewhere. I even tried a new
power supply.

Thanks for your help.
