System restore does not work. Is WinRescue XP an effective replacement?
Hi group,

My System Restore stopped working a couple of weeks ago and in spite of
trying all of the solutions suggested here and a whole lot more from Google
searches I have been unsuccessful.

WinRescue XP is a recommended replacement but I would appreciate reports of
hands on usage. Is it really the panacea claimed by the suppliers?

Also I have instructions for re-installing System Restore by installing from
sr.inf. Is this safe for an silver surfer nervous of rotting up his
computer?

XP Home +SP2 and all patches. SP 3 expected on Tuesday 29th 2008. That will
be fun I expect.

TIA

Jumbo

Re: System restore does not work. Is WinRescue XP an effective replacement?

Windows System restore only restore system files and minor program
files. If you need entire PC protection you would need to use
something like RollBack Rx or GoBack. I prefer RollBack Rx because
Goback no longer support Vista. Also, RollBack Rx can maintain a
checkpoint history with a small amount of disk space.

For more information on the comparison between MS System restore and
Rollback you can go to: http://www.horizondatasys.com/217802.ihtml

For information on goback (not recommended) you can check out:
www.goback.com

Hope this helps.

Not really minor, but whatever.

Better yet - and MUCH better, yet - restore your system backup (like with
Acronis True Image).

You could take the trouble to find out why System Restore does not work!

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrants? What firewall?

I know for a fact that if you have some "version" of Norton Anti-Virys
(separate or with NIS, NSW or 360) you need to locate the direction on
how to "re-activate" System Restore. NAV "product protection" "lames"
System Restore.

Sorry for the bad choice of words. I would like to say system restore
only restores "*Some*" program files (only the one's that Windows
recognizes)
