Re: error message 0x80070005 from XP2 upgrade failure
got as far as Method 3: Rename the Catroot2 folder but on this line:
ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2
I could not enter it without getting a syntax error.
I am moving on to the other methods and see what they can do

Re: error message 0x80070005 from XP2 upgrade failure
Retried method 3 but still failed to get past the syntax
worked through method 4 & 5 but they did not help
method 6 does not apply
method 7 I could not do - I don't know enough to follow the instructions
method 8 I worked through and had 2 certificates with different dates. Will
try and get copies from another computer later
method 9, did not know how to do it
method 10, could not find the contents of the Windows distribution folder.
This only leaves method 11, the inplace upgrade, which I would rather leave
until I have exhausted the other possibilities. So if you could help with any
of the above problems I would be grateful!

You may have a "Prescott" intel processor. The above link is a utility to
detect that.
XP SP2 vs. Intel Prescott: http://cquirke.mvps.org/sp2intel.htm

Device drivers known to cause instability in SP2 are blocked during
installation:
