SP3 download preparations
My OS is WinXP SP2 and I have corresponding disk i.e. WinXP with SP2. (I
also have a separate SP2 disk). The OS is updated religiously and is current
with all patches, hotfixes etc..

I intend to download SP3 when it becomes available from the official
Microsoft website.

What preparation (if any) have to be performed prior downloading/installing
SP3 in order to keep my OS running smoothly; I read somewhere that various
hotfixes should be uninstalled/removed...

TIA.

Re: SP3 download preparations
The patches you refer to were for the beta and RC so that Windows Update
would offer the pre-release versions of SP3 to the tester. You should not
need to do anything when SP3 becomes available on WU tomorrow. It will not
be a mandatory offering for some time but you should see its availability
when you visit WU.

Re: SP3 download preparations
Make an Image backup of the hard drive/Windows Partition before you install
SP3,
just in case something goes wrong or doesn't work properly after installing
SP3.

Image Backup software:
Norton Ghost

True Image (has a 15 day trial version also)

Re: SP3 download preparations
Aside from normal clean up operations, like disk cleanup, and defrag, you
might test your System Restore to see if it is working correctly. If SP3
fails, there will be a restore point created to go back to.

Here are some troubleshooting steps to take when System Restore fails to
restore: http://bertk.mvps.org/html/srfail.html

Are SP3 CDs to be made freely available as they were for SP2? How do you
get a CD?

When SP3 is released, they will be available; as to freely, in many if not
most cases shipping has *not* been free. Plus, there is a shipping delay of
perhaps up to six weeks.

When it's released, you will be able to download the whole thing and burn it
to CD, which will give you the same result, for perhaps a couple of dollars
and a few hours of waiting.

Patrick

Thanks for your thoughts. I am in no hurry. I prefer to read the
problems others encounter first. With SP2 there was initially no
charge -that came later. Perhaps the Accountants woke up to the very
considerable costs their colleagues had incurred.

I have it installed here and it works fine. If you image your drive
before installing, you can check it for yourself without having to
wait.

Re: SP3 download preparations
See these tips of MVP Jupiter Jones (most will apply to WinXP SP3):
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/xpsp.htm. Ditto for most of what you'll find
in these subforums: http://aumha.net/index.php?c=16

Here are a few things you can do that should help you avoid most problems:

1. Make absolutely sure the machine's free of any hijackware, Trojan, or
virus infections before installing SP3.

2. Run Disk Cleanup then run a Defrag session before installing SP3.

3. Disable all real-time protections (anti-virus; anti-spyware; third-party
firewall) before installing SP3.

4. Reboot twice after installing SP3.
