Unmountable Boot Volume Error - Need Help on Specific Error Code
I got the Unmountable Boot Volume error after rebooting from running windows
update on my XP Pro machine. The box has been in use for a year with the
current install and hardware specs. The only change prior to the BSOD was
downloading and installing the most recent Windows Updates about a week ago.

The specific error message I am getting is:

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME Stop: 0x000000ED (0x8AC6C590, 0xC000009C,
0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I am running two WD 120 Sata drives. Have been using them for about a year
without any problems. No BIOS changes, etc, just the windows update. I am
trying to use recovery console, but it's not recogonizing C as a windows
install to boot into, only D (which was the Vista RC1).

When I use SeaTools and PartitionMagic, it does recognize C and allows me to
access and modify files on that drive, however RC will not recognize it. I
am having a little issue remembering the admin pass for Vista, so in the
meantime I have been running other tools to try and fix the drive.

I was able to access the boot.ini file using the tools from my custom
recovery disk, and it does point to the right directory and installation.
Again, all files are visable and accessiable from the dos based applications
I am able to use on the recovery disk that I have. It just doesn't have
fixboot, which is what I really need. Partition Magics chkdsk returned no
errors.

Ok, so my question is, first I have tried to search for information on the 2
particular secondary error codes (0x8AC6C590, 0xC000009C) but can't find any
info on those. Does anyone know what they mean?

I know I can remove the drive and transfer files since I am able to access
them, but I like doing things the hard way and want to try and get the drive
bootable again first. Is there any other way of accessing the tools in
recovery console without having to log into the Vista install on Drive D?
