log on

I am a Mac person, and my wife has an inexpensive pc with XP on it. We never
set up any password, but today my son logged off of windows by accident, and
now when we restart it, it asks for user (owner) and a password.

Windows XP what? (Home, Professional, etc?)

If Home, boot into Safe Mode (Google for Safe Mode boot in Windows XP) and
logon as the user "administrator" with no password (likely - as it was
probably never set.)

If Professional (or other version of XP) - at the Welcome Screen, press
CTRL+ALT+DEL twice and type in te username "administrator" (without the
quotation marks) for the username and leave the password blank (likely - as
it was probably never set.)

In either case - once logged on - you can go into the control panel and the
User Accounts and change the Owner Password. If you used the Encrypted File
System - this is not what you want to do.
