Unwarranted Paper-Clip Symbol
I keep getting a paper-clip symbol to the left of my email subject name in
the inbox whenever the email is in HTML even though it does not have an
attachment.
How can I get rid of this?

Re: Unwarranted Paper-Clip Symbol
Sounds strange. Maybe there is an attachment but your security settings do not
allow you to access it. If so and assuming that you're using Outlook Express,
try this:

Launch OE then click on Tools > Options > Security [tab]. Under Virus Protection
section, UNCHECK "Do not allow attachments.....", then click on the Apply & OK.

You may have to close & restart OE to effect the change.

If no joy, post back with info regarding the e-mail application you're using.

First off, you might want to post your question to the Outlook Express
newsgroup. Search your news server for this newsgroup.

microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlooke xpress

That said, click on the Tools menu on the toolbar at the top of the OE window.
Click on Options from the menu. Click on the Read tab. In the "Reading messages"
section, is "Read messages in plain text" checked? That would account for your
seeing the paper clip next to HTML messages.

Good luck

Your virus checker may be doing that

"Read messages in plain text" is not checked.

Re: Unwarranted Paper-Clip Symbol
I just now unchecked "Do not allow attachments.....". It remains to be seen
whether new arrivals in the Inbox will have the Paper-clip symbol if in HTML
but are without attachment(s). And yes, I'm using Outlook Express.

Re: Unwarranted Paper-Clip Symbol
The attachment is the phrase "This email was scanned by AVG, etc."
You do not want to restrict attachments, you just do not want to scan your mail either incoming or
outgoing.

Most technical people recommend not using email scanners in the antivirus software.
With AVG you can disable it after the installation and then it will nag you.
The best solution is to re-install AVG and choose the "Optional Installation" and then when asked,
uncheck the email scanning option. If you re-install, you may get the option to add/remove
features and you can remove email scanning there as well.

The logic for not installing email scanning is: If you have a good up-to-date antivirus program, an
email may come with a virus, but as soon as the virus attempts to act, the program kills it. We
should do the same at the airports. 99.9999% of all flights do not have hijackers. Let's let
everyone on board without screening and arm an effective crew. Then on that one flight with the bad
guys, the crew will kill them as soon as they attempt to act. It would sure make life easier for
the traveling public.
