You've got to do some reading first

Things to do prior downloadin/installing SP3.
1.Make an Image backup of the hard drive/Windows Partition before you
install SP3
2.Test your System Restore to see if it is working correctly.
3.Make absolutely sure the machine's free of any hijackware, Trojan, or
virus infections before installing SP3.
4.Run Disk Cleanup then run a Defrag session before installing SP3.
5.Disable all real-time protections (anti-virus; anti-spyware;third-party
firewall) before downloading/installing SP3.
6.Reboot twice after installing SP3.
7.Run another Defrag.

Re: Unable to download Service Pack 3
I've already done most of my homework "reading" before signing up at this
site---and been to most all sites that would pertain to my problem though
nothing mentioning "The update.ver file is not correct," but thanks I'll
keep "Reading" and trying to get updates done.

I got a similar error on the second PC that I applied SP3 to. I
downloaded the ISO image from Microsoft and created an SP3 CD. That
worked well, and I can use it again if I find another computer.

I couldn't find how I'd got to the download page, so I searched "ISO XP
SP3 download" on www.microsoft.com and the first hit was

Re: Unable to download Service Pack 3
Net: Don't do it! Don't install it! Seriously, you were wondering if these
updates were worth the headache: SP3 crashed my computer over & over, and
caused me nothing but grief. Read some of these other threads and see what
problems others are having. It's NOT WORTH IT. You can still put security
updates on your machine, without SP3. Here's what it did to me: Programs
wouldn't load. Documents wouldn't load. IE7 closed over & over. Norton
Antivirus permanently trashed. Computer crashed 15-20 times over the course
of 2 days. And now, even after uninstalling SP3, I've still had issues to
deal with, mostly that I had to remove NAV completely and go with a different
antivirus program. I'm sure I'll discover more problems, but, seriously,
DON"T INSTALL IT. It's too late for me - save yourself!
