online gaming issue

My friend has been having computer issues, and i've been trying my best
to help her figure out the source, since I'm generally better at
looking up things, or finding where to ask. So, forgive me for the lack
of information here, but i've never actually seen the computer to which
i am about to refer.

She has a desktop with a dual core motherboard. It has like 2-3 gigs of
ram, and she recently bought a good video card. (geforce 8800 i believe,
but not positive.) Games run excellently offline.

The trouble is, when she plays any online games, she experiences severe
lag. She has this computer hooked up to a cable internet connection.
They also have DSL for the other computers in the house. She has used
her laptop on the cable with no lag, and has tried the desktop on the
DSL as well with no improvement.

New network card as well, which was tested and worked fine in another
computer. something has to be wrong, software related, but i'm out of
ideas. She has no firewall , and only has AV running when scanning,
though there is a built in firewall on the modem, but it doesn't
interfere with any other computer so it -shouldn't- be an issue. done
virus and spyware sweeps, and remarkably, her system is clean. few
things found, sure, but mine is usually way worse with no net issues.

Like I said, out of ideas. any suggestions on what could be the cause,
or at least what to try?

What games?

In many cases the location of the server is a key problem for lag.

In Counter-Strike you want to pick a server that shows very low pings,
not just the map you want to play.

In Guild-Wars you don't really have a choice of Server, but you can
switch locations, and that helps.

The response to your question depends on what games.

Do you really want to trust someone that was banned from posting
directly to Microsoft Usenet servers, someone that has posted links to
pornographic materials on HIS WEBSITE, who's website is in the MVP HOST
Block list?

Re: online gaming issue

The games she plays include Neverwinter Nights 1+2, plays fine offline
but lags on any server, WoW, EQ2, SWG, and there may be others but I am
not aware of, or do not remember them. All servers have the same issue,
and she can hook up any other computer to the same internet connection
and play them without any lag at all. It's obviously something with
that computer itself, but as some games run fine offline, its not the
system specs, but rather the internet connection.

oh, and the only AV I know of that she has is Spyware Doctor. its what
I use as well, and has never caused issues.
