System Information will not open.
I cannot get either "Help and Support" or "System Information" to open
in Win XP Home. I can't say for sure that "System Information" ever
worked, but I know that "Help and Support" did. I shut down Kaspersky
Internet Security and PC Tool's Spyware Doctor, but no help. Tried
clicking directly on each .exe file for H&S & SI, but still they won't
open. I'm stumped!

Re: System Information will not open.
Thanks Mark. I applied both fixes from Kelly's but still no luck.
Something did change though: I now get the error message that
helpctr.exe cannot be found. I found it just fine at
"C:|Windows\pchealth\helpctr\binaries. However, when I click on the
file, nothing apparently happens.

I have also done a lot of searching on Google for "system information
will not open", and ran all the checks suggested. The registry shows
that msinfo32.exe is right where it belongs and the registry values
are all correct. WMI Performance Adapter is set for manual, but even
setting it to started didn't help any. Help and Support is set to
"Started: and "Automatic"

From what I have read, these two problems seem to be connected

Do you have any other ideas?

Re: System Information will not open.

Mark,

I fixed the error message problem. The .reg file I got from Kelly
pointed to "winnt\" instead of "windows\". Didn't fix the other
problems though.

Re: System Information will not open. Updated info, please read.
Here is updated info:

I have tried starting Windows in safe mode, but still get the same
problem with both Sys Info and Help. They look like they are going to
work, but nothing opens. I tried launching the following: (msinfo32
/nfo C:\TEMP\CONFLICTS.NFO /categories
+componentsproblemdevices+resourcesconflicts+resou rcesforcedhardware),
and: (msinfo32 /nfo C:\TEMP\SYSSUM.NFO /categories +systemsummary)
from "Run" and the files are created, but when I try to open either
file with an NFO viewer it tells me that "The process cannot access
the file because it is being used by another process."

I hope this sheds more light on the problem, and someone can figure
out what's wrong.

Below are copies of what I have sent so far and replies.
