Adobe problem

Have Adobe reader 8 loaded, but when I try to open it I get error message
'verify patch package exists' I cannot uninstall the programme nor can I
download it as I again get an error saying older programme exists andcannot
be removed. I have read about Microsoft uninstall manager but I am worried
about removing other programmes as well Any advice appreciated
