random blue screen of death

I have a Compaq Presario 2190US with XP pro that someone gave me a few
months ago, and now whenever I start it I get an error message telling
me that a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to
prevent damage to your computer, etc. Under technical information, it
gives me: stop 0x0000008E (0xc0000005, 0x8056E2D7, 0xF0DF6A58,
0x00000000). I haven't been able to find anything on this particular
error message. I can get into safe mode, but ran into more problems
when trying to update the bios as suggested by the error message. I
hadn't installed anything new recently, either. Any help would be
appreciated.
