Userinit.exe - Application Error Win XP
Hi All,
I would appreciate any help you can offer. I am running a laptop with XP
SP2. About a week ago I started noticing that occasionally my desktop would
clear out. That is no icons would be on the desktop, my start bar would
disapear and even using keyboard shortcuts I could not access any programs.
However, if I had a program running I could switch to it using Alt+Tab, etc.
I would have to restart the laptop to get my icons back. No error message
would present.
Yesterday though, I had to restart the laptop like usual and now while the
Windows load screens come up (I don't get to the log in screen) an error
message presents and if I click OK I get no option to log in and I obviously
do not get any idcons, programs, etc. The only thing I can do is ALT+CTRL+DEL
and the task manager only shows a "user init applicaiton error" as running
but no systme processes are running.
The error message I receive is: Userinit.exe - Application error: The
application failed to initialize proplerly (0xc0000005).
I am looking for a way to fix this without having to wipe the hardrive (or
at least let me get the info off the hardrive before reinstalling etc)
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hi
Problems started a week ago...did you install any software, added hardware,
updated drivers...etc.
Assuming no malware related issues, check your startup items in msconfig and
do some troubleshooting.
Good luck

Re: Userinit.exe - Application Error Win XP
I have the same problem. I am not sure how to fix it yet. To get around it,
after clicking OK to get to a blank desktop, I use the Ctr-Alt-Del to bring
up the Windows Task Manager, click New Task, type Desktop and click OK. That
brings back my desktop with task bars and shortcuts.
Hope this helps. If anyone know how to fix the problem permanently, greatly
appreciate your input.

RE: Userinit.exe - Application Error Win XP
I am having this problem also. My latest download before this started
happening was from a torrent site. Ironically I was trying to download an IQ
program?? Well anyway my desktop icons and task bar started to disapear and
then next thing you know my background picture went and now I keep getting
this foolish USERINIT.exe Application error message. What the heck is going
on. I tried the tread suggested by paul and it did not work. The other
problems it is causing with me is it has limited my IE and does not except
cookies so I get navigate to certain sites AND it has shut down my automatic
updates AND it does not allow me to access my Add and Remove programs in my
controll panel. Someone please HELP!!!!!!
