Windows XP Pro Download
I need a little bit of help if possible. I've had Windows XP for quite a
while now for my labtop and just recently (about 10 minutes ago) it
contracted a virus that disrupts all ".exe programs so all in all, I can't do
a thing for it. I still have my product key and all software included that
came extra, the only thing that I do not have is the Windows XP Pro startup
disc. Is there anywhere that I may be able to re-download it and re-install
it with my working product key? I would like to stay away from having to
re-purchase a completely new product key and XP Pro being that I leave in 20
days for the Marine Corps. So, all in all, all that I am asking is: is there
a site where I can just download Windows XP Pro and then type in my current
key? I haven't my startup disc because I opted out on purchasing one from the
manufacturer...should've known better. I probably went over kill on my labtop
but I formatted the entire thing, luckily backed up all documents, pictures,
and music to hard disc.

Since you did not go through the procedure described in the manual on
how to burn recovery CDs to reimage your OS partition, go check the
manual to see if you can still do that. Often you'll notice an option
during bootup to run the program to burn the recovery CDs or to perform
the recovery from a hidden partition on the hard disk. Otherwise,
contact the manufacturer of your unidentified laptop to ask them to ship
you the replacement recovery CDs. Dell got them to me in 3 business
days. It took a very long evening to do the recovery (which returns the
system back to its sale-time state so you'll have to reinstall your
applications). Then you'll restore your data files from the regular
system backups that you should've been performing if you considered them
of value.

UNLUCKILY, you probably also deleted any possibility of restoring the system
from the files stored on the disk for that purpose...maybe...depending
on vendor.
Also, obtaining a disk may or may not help you. There are different
classes of
keys and disks. There's been a lot published, but I still don't
understand it.
But I do know that, more often than not, the key I have in one hand
won't work with the CD I have in the other. Sometimes it's related
to the hardware I'm holding in the other hand.

M$ seems little concerned about your ability to use your licensed
software...sorry for any inconvenience...click here to purchase
it again...
Something is very wrong when you can't use your licensed software,
but a bootleg comes right up and runs.

Since you want 20 day turn around, my only fix would be to buy a retail
CD and install it.
Make sure you have the drivers etc for your PC. Those can usually be
downloaded from the vendor online. If you wanted to, you might
slipstream them into your new XP CD you buy with something like Nlite.
This way the drivers would be there for the system to initialize with
making it work from get go.

Someone else might chime in, but I'm not sure why a retail CD wouldn't
work, except for the drivers.

There was a suggestion to buy the CD's, and delivery time would be your
killer.
