Contact Dell. There is NOTHING anyone can do for you here.
If you "recently purchased a used Dell Inspiron 6000" it is under warranty and it is
responsible for charging the battery.
The battery itself has only a one year warranty.

Re: Dell Insiron 600 battery wont charge
I did recently purchase a used laptop, but the laptop is used, 2 1/2 yrs old.
It is no longer under warranty and I didn't buy it from Dell. My question is
why won't a Dell battery work in it?

Yep - that's your question...

Welcome to microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support, where issues
surrounding Microsoft Windows XP (in particular - the Help and Support
feature found in Windows XP - although this meaning has long been lost for
this particular newsgroup) are discussed.

What you have is a hardware issue - nothing to do with Microsoft or Windows
XP. It is a question you should ask Dell or give more detail to anyone who
might be willing to help you.

Not all Inspiron's use the same batteries. That's one fact.

Another would be that the message you refer to (about not recognizing the
battery) is likely only a warning that says that battery is either not meant
for this system OR is not an official Dell battery.

The last fact is that - as I said - this issue has nothing to do with
anything other than pure hardware - meaning your best path for support is
not in a group meant for the discussion of Windows XP (software.) ;-)

It could be the laptop cannot charge batteries anymore (that type of
hardware issue - the laptop doesn't send the right signals to allow this to
happen any longer) or it could be the original battery is just dead and the
borrowed ones are of the wrong type.

You might find a place like a "Batteries Plus" - where they specialize in
such things as replacement batteries and see what you can find... Like:

http://www.batteriesplus.com/product...-Series/1.aspx

Or you might buy a new battery direct from Dell:
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/p...&mfgpid=167571

Or you might take the laptop to a local "mom & pop" computer shop to see if
they can tell you if it is the battery or the laptop and see what your
options are.

However - as has been pointed out to you - there's not much anyone here can
do for you other than give you advice like I have.

OK, so it (the laptop) is noty under warranty. That does NOT make my statement moot. It
only changes Dell's responsibility to fix the problem. It is Dell who is best apt to fix
the problem.

The battery is installed in the laptop, The power supply connects to the laptop. The
laptop is responsible to determine the battery state of charge as well as in charging the
battery. Therefor the problem is either with the notebook if the battery fails to charge or
the battery itself.

So either the batteries you have have both gone bad and can't be charged or the laptops
internal circuitry has failed and is incapable of charging even a good battery.

In either case, you need to contact the manufacturer to determine the best course of action.

Laptop batteries are not often interchangeable between computer models,
even those made by the same company. There's no way around it.

If you want a working battery, you'll have to buy one.

There is a Dell Support Forum for this too.
http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/
Give details. Like the battery #'s if you can to the forum. As
others have said, you may be mixing batteries.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000, and my battery finally got to the point
that it would only hold a charge long enough to more the power plug from
outlet to outlet, 2 minutes. I bout a new one for $50+/- someplace.
But a 100% replacement model# for model#. 9 cell too. Not the 6
cell. It works great.

Also try the reverse, if the other guy will allow you to, take your
battery to his machine and see if it charges. If it does then the
battery is good. Look at power packs or the laptop itself then. You
can swap power packs too to try to eliminate the defective part. You
are lucky if he has a 6000, as this makes troubleshooting a breeze.

*But be warned* if its not 1 for 1 then you might blow something. As
others have said, not every battery is the same.
