XP machine: What's happening to corrupt my smallest icons?

Bit rot?

I have an XP/SP2 machine that has been stable for years. Recently,
the icons that appear in the upper-left corner of some of the windows
has become corrupt. It isn't the same app all the time and it goes
back to normal on a reboot.

has anyone else seen this happen?

Please provide the following information:
How much memory does your PC have?
Also the amount of free space remaining on the hard drive?
