Power Saver

My comparatively new Packard Bell Laptop will not power off the screen
no matter it is set on 1 minute or 1 hour....I can adjust the time it
takes for the screen-saver to activate. I'm certain it used to work and
although I can't be certain I think installing SP3 may have been the
start of my problem. I also notice that closing the lid does not seem
to do anything. I do not wish to manually close down as I prefer to
have downloads and virus checks etc done during the night. Any help
will be much appreciated. Thanks. Tel
