Desktop Icon Names Changed
All my Desktop icon names changed to "(-X)". Where the X is, appears a
number. The number is different for each icon. I have scanned the PC for
viruses, spyware, adware and found no problems. I installed Service Pack 3,
with hopes it had a fix, but the names did not revert back.

Any ideas to the cause? And what would be the resolution, beside renaming
each icon back to the original name?

Thanks.

Re: Desktop Icon Names Changed
A system restore would have been my recommendation but not now that you
installed SP3. Either rename the shortcuts or make new ones and delete the
bad ones.

Try this fix from here:

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm
Reboot your machine after applying the file.

Did you checked for malware using an Anti-malware app or just the AV scan?
Make sure all clean by scanning from other vendors like those for ex:
SuperAntispyware - Free
http://www.superantispyware.com/supe...freevspro.html

Run a scan from here on-line:
http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/d...d=ie&venid=sym
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx
Download Avast Cleaner (offline scanner) from here:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-virus-cleaner.html
HTH.
