How do i recover Items which have been lost from the desktop

My problem is this, I was using my computer and nearly all the items in the
desktop dissapreared(without a chrash one i was in a program and they just
dissapeared). I have checked the reclying bin and can't see them there and
also done a few searches wtih no joy.

I think the root problem is that I have differnt users setup on this pc and
i deleted the last user and created a new one but windows doesn't seam to
have caught that on and kept using old users c:documents and setting...
desktop folder to store all the items in the desktop and not a new folder.
What i think is happened is windows relised this on and has deleted all the
itesm out of this desktop folder.

How would i get these back, is there a recovery program i could get a trial
of or somthing like this Thanks for your time
