KB951748 Security Update Kills Network Connection
As soon as I installed this update that was released today, I was unable to
acquire a network connection. A quick check with my ISP confirmed that the
problem was not on their end. My modem was showing an IP, and my system had
successfully acquired an IP from the router - but I still had no internet
connectivity.

As soon as I uninstalled KB951748, the problem went away.

Microsoft strikes again...

Got Zone Alarm installed on your computer? Take a look at these threads in the

Zone Alarm says uninstall the update until they figure out what's going on,
if you're using zone alarm.

Or you can set the internet zone to moderate instead of high security.

Re: KB951748 Security Update Kills Network Connection
While I agree that MS is at least partially fault, the story might be one of
a more complex internaction among programs.

See posting in this newsgroup at 2:29 PM by Ron Hardin, plus responses.

I had similar behavior, in which internet failed if Zone Alarm was on, but
actually worked with it off. (Of course, before the XP update internet
worked with ZA on.)

I agree that removing the update via add/remove programs fixes the problem.

Re: KB951748 Security Update Kills Network Connection

Like Tom Hall, I had instant connection failures immediately after
today's updates. Unlike him, I was running ZoneAlarm. When I turned
off ZoneAlarm, I still could not connect to anything. System Restore
(to the point created just before the update was installed) made
connection possible again.

All I had to do was to uninstall the security update and then block it. Now
Windows Update tells me I have hidden critical updates, but I'd rather live
without KB951748 than without my internet connection.

That's fine if you're running ZoneAlarm. What about a fix for people (such
as myself) who AREN'T using ZoneAlarm?
