DVD drive not reading sometimes after SP3

Sometimes I find that my DVD drive doesn't want to recognize a disk that's
inserted, or it suddenly doesn't realize that the same disk that's been in
the drive for a week is still in the drive.

For example:

Tueday night I get home form work at 12:30am. I do a few things around the
house, then played Diablo 2 till about 3:30am with no issues. While I was at
work, my computer was being used by a friend from 3pm till 11pm. No issues
there either even after being left on almost all day...

Wednesday morning I boot up the computer, check email, get peer pressured
into buying a Wii, come home to play Diablo 2 again, but I get a message to
insert the disk yet its been in the drive for almost a week..?

There are no issues in device manager, I double checked for windows updates
and there are none since reloading the computer 2 weeks ago, removed the
drive from device manager and re-installed, search for an hour on the web for
others with the same issues and still no luck.

It doesn't mater what type of disk I insert; Windows XP, music CD, DVD
movie, game cd/dvd's... the drive spins and shows activity according to the
light on the front as if its about to pull up the autoplay menu.. but nothing
happens.
Under My Computer the drive looks empty as I can't access it.

If I reboot several times, hop on one foot, do the truffle shuffle and give
the secret handshake, it starts working again... till it decides to do this
again.

Even as a computer tech back when XP first came out, till just before the
age of Duo Core processors I've had this problem on and off maybe once a year
on totally different computers. The only common factor being XP Home edition.

Once a year I can live with, but 5 times a week as often as 3 times a day is
a little much...

I can't see this being hardware related as I've swapping the drive,
reloading windows, ect...


Since Service pack 3, I'm getting it sometimes daily...

So is this a Windows XP or Service Pack 3 issue??
Any ideas?

I just reloaded this computer on sunday, so I really doubt its a virus,
spyware, driver corruption, ect...

Boot to Safe Mode (f8 on restart) and log on as the default "Administrator"
account.
Locate and click the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider On
the Edit menu, click Permissions . Click the registry key for the user that
is currently logged on and ensure that Read and Full Control are both set to
Allow .

Click the Advanced button, ensure that the user that is currently logged on
is selected, that Full Control is listed in the Permissions column, and that
This Key and Subkeys is listed in the Apply to column. Click to select the
Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that
apply to child objects check box. Click Apply , and then click Yes when you
receive a prompt to continue. Click OK , and then click OK again

Do the same for the other users.

I checked the registry and I'm already set to allow as I have admin rights.
Keys and Subkeys are also listed where they should be...

Everything there seems to check out fine.

I had no issues today with the drive, but its not a constant issue so it
makes it difficult for me to figure out whats causing the problem.

Maybe its time to call Chip Coffee? =\

Bump...

Anyone...?

I have the same issue. The current fix is uninstalling Service Pack 3. I
tried a multitude of Microsoft fixes, but none of them work. Both of my DVD
drives are not recognizing the presents of media. I am using a Samsung DVD
drive and a Sony DVD RW.

Does Vista have the same issues or is this a ploy to get us to move to
Vista?


If anyone comes across a fix, please post. I would like to be able to play
Bioshock with SP3 installed.

I can play still use my drive but only some of the time.
If I leave the computer on for a while, sometimes I have no issues all day
long... or times my drive won't read any disks, even the same disk that has
been in the drive for weeks.
One day it worked fine after startup, I walked one block to the video store
and back, then my drive wouldn't work...

My drive is an LG Dual Layer DVD burner. Its about 2 years old now so its
not a case of new hardware issues and swapping the drive for a new CD burner
didn't help either.

WE HAVE LIKE ISSUES! After removing Crap Ware IE: Intervideo & Sonic Software
from a new system at setup. A NEW DVD RW drive will not read or autoplay any
type of media After downloading XP3. All diagnosis have failed to date?

Then my hunch is a service pack issue, but since no one else has chimed in
with any suggestions, another MS issue get swept under the rug...
