The best tool to get is something like this:

There are many other brands available, this is for illustration only.
Such a USB adapter will connect to either 2.5 or 3.5 PATA (they have
different connectors) or to 2.5 or 3.5 SATA (they have the same
connectors!). The beauty of this is you don't have to open your desktop PC
to connect to the problem drive, and you don't have to deal with installing
into an enclosure.
I've used this to clone drives when upgrading a machine to a larger drive,
and for troubleshooting.

I've not tried to repair a laptop as yet but do their hard drives have the
same physical connectors as used in a desktop computer. In other words, can
I remove the HD and connect it to my Windows XP PC?
TIA
