XP Pro stops responding
I have had a problem with my computer failing to respond. The screen just
freezes at any moment and nothing I do seems to unfreeze it. I have to push
the reset button to restart windows. I have tried everything that I could
think of doing (downloading video drivers, mouse drivers, replace video card,
had 2 "experts" try to diagnose the problem) to no avail. Any help would be
appreciated. I am starting to wonder if it is a compatibility problem with my
motherboard. This is a custom built machine (not a brand name computer)

RE: XP Pro stops responding
A fairly simple way to chk XP problems, read & follow the guidelines using
kb310560 You should also look in "event-viewer" for details.Since this maybe
a continous problem, follow guideline in kb934650 One might also use the
xp utility already installed in the OS,type this in run, VERIFIER To learn
about
it read kb244617

If you can remember when this started , have you tried a system
restore ?

Re: XP Pro stops responding
When the pc is booting up (or if you restart the pc),
Tap F8 Function key to get Advanced bootup options. Tap & keep repeat
tapping F8 !

You will see "Disable automatic restart on system failure" as an option .
Select that.
Then next, try Windows in usual (normal) mode.

A lot of times a "freeze" turns out to be a need for the system to restart
because of a problem and the problem keeps repeating.
My clearing the "restart on failure" you will get a STOP error with a series
of numbers. Those are handy for diagnosis.
So if that happens, right down all the codes and the text description and
post that back here.

Beyond this, tell us if you have recently built this system, or made
hardware or software changes.
