Help! XP has somehow corrupted my Internet
Today I went to Help to try to resolve a shutdown problem I had. The second
option was to uncheck "system.ini" in "msconfig". After I rebooted, my
computer went nuts. I lost my Desktop settings, my Norton Systemworks will
not work, I can't get Help to come up, and I can't use Internet. (I'm on
another computer right now.) When I go to Control Panel, I can't bring up
the "Telephony" option. If I try to start a new connection using the Wizard,
I can't set up my ISP info. I have dial-up and it is "grayed out", leaving
only the Broadband setting.

I don't know what happened! Can anyone here help me? I called my local
ISP, but the tech didn't know - thought perhaps my drivers were corrupted. I
can't use System Restore because I had Norton Go Back, and Norton doesn't
work either.

I'm really "dead in the water" - Help!

Go back and recheck "system.ini" in "msconfig".

Cyberstalking is a crime. If you had one as bad as I did simply ignoring
them is not an option.

Re: Help! XP has somehow corrupted my Internet
Thank you for replying. I forgot to say last time that when I took
"system.ini" off, my computer would not reboot. So I put it back on and when
Windows came back up, I had problems. After reading your post, I tried
removing "system.ini" again, could not reboot, put it back on and restarted
my computer. Still can't use Internet.

When I couldn't get Help to come up, I got a message that "a system service
was not started". I'm no computer whiz, but I went to "Administrative" in
Control Panel and clicked on "Services". I see that a number of items,
including the "Telephony" I couldn't access earlier, and "Help" were
disabled. I right clicked to see if I could start them, but that option was
"grayed out".

I'd sure appreciate more input. Thanks!

When you run msconfig, what do you see under Startup Selection?

Did you try System Restore by any chance?
