Windows startup problem (Keyboard issue)

Hi everyone,
I tried to boot my PC earlier and found myself seeing the fairly common
startup screen with the message saying the system was interrupted
possibly due to a power failure or the power button being pressed, with
the subsequent options of Safe Mode
Safe mode with networking
Safe...with command prompt

Select last known correct config

Start windows normally

Now, the problem is, my keyboard fails to respond and I cannot select
any option. Before anyone says, yes I have tried a second keyboard,
although both let me select f11 to enter the boot menu and the keyboard
works fine.

I'm not at panic mode yet, but any help would be great!

If you are using a usb keyboard, change to the other type and try
again. I had the same problem.

RE: Windows startup problem (Keyboard issue)
When you get that list of startup options, you should also get the timer
counting down the seconds 30-0, then auto restart in normal startup.

Do you have the proper XP disk, or the recovery disks?

Re: Windows startup problem (Keyboard issue)

I know I have a number of 'advent' discs, but I'm not sure I have a
dedicated XP disc

Have you tries replacing the USB keyboard with a PS/2 keyboard?

Your reference to "Advent" disks suggests that you may have purchased
your computer from PC World, Curry's or Dixons in the UK. (AFAIK,
Advent computers in the UK are sold exclusively by companies in the DSG
Retail group). Many Advent computers are re-badged or special versions
of Medion equipment.

If my suspicion is correct, you may be able to download the correct
keyboard drivers etc., from http://support.thetechguys.com

An alternative option option is to use a recovery disk. Your Advent
disk is probably a recovery disk, to be used as a last resort to restore
the computer to its original factory condition. You will need to read
the manual, but the use of a recovery disk usually erase all existing
files on your hard drive. If you need to use the recovery disk, you
should back up important data files, etc.

Re: Windows startup problem (Keyboard issue)

UPDATE!

My keyboard is now working (I altered some peripheral settings on the
BIOS settings page).

So I am able to select the different start up modes BUT it still won't
start up. I got a blue screen appear momentarily although didn't have
time to write down the error message. It seems intent on the start up
loop.

At least this rules out keyboard error, but it seems it must be more
serious, and I'm guessing perhaps a section of the hard drive is
damaged? Course I don't have much of a clue, so I'm probably wrong

I would imagine at this point my options may be somewhat limited? Try a
system restore? But does anyone know any other suggestions before I go
down this route? I don't fancy losing all my stuff unless i REALLY have
to

Cheers guys

Re: Windows startup problem (Keyboard issue)

UPDATE 2!!!

I THINK I may have success!

I ran the system repair console, ran it, did a disk check, it found an
error, but then on restart, the login page appeared. Now, it's let me
log on, but I'm still a bit weary

When I got the blue screen that I mentioned before, I found the
message...it was this:

'unmountable Boot Volume'

What does this mean?

What can I do now that I can log-in to further examine the issue or
should I now assume it's ok?
