Windows XP Control Panel Uninstall

I have a couple of old programs that I removed via the Control Panel's,
Add or Remove Programs. When I initially uninstalled with this method
they did indeed uninstall from the computer. Their gone from the hard
drive and their reference in the Start Menu has been removed.

However, they are still showing up in the list of installed programs in
Control Panel.

Does anyone know if there's another way I can clean this up and remove
these names from this list?

RE: Windows XP Control Panel Uninstall
Sure,

Read Microsoft KB555495 in the M/S knowledge base.

"Start>Run>Regedit>Ok.
Now navigate to the following key:-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \
Uninstall
Now find the orphaned or, invalid software entry from the list and delete
it.Close the registry editor."

Be very careful! You won't like the results if you make a mistake in the
registry. Read up on how to back up the registry before you start. And back
it up.

Hi bsquared,

Yes there is. Click on it again and it will report that the product has
been removed already, Would you like to remove it from Add or Remove Program
Listing? Click Yes.

Re: XP Control Panel program removal

Milt & thecreator... Thanks for the information.

Unfortunately, the program is a very old version of MS Office and
requires the CD be installed in order to remove or delete any of the
applications. I have the CD and when I put it in when requested it goes
through the motions and says that it has removed everything. However,
no matter how many times I try it still leaves the entry in the Control
Panel.

I've even tried a couple of the Registry Maintenance applications that
are supposed to clean up the Registry, but they don't fix it either.

I guess my only option is to try the method Milt mentions. But since I
have very little experience in messing with the Registry, this makes me
very nervous. I did read the Knowledge Base article and I understand
about the backup of the Registry which of course places a copy of the
Registry on my hard drive. But even if I have this backup on my hard
drive or an external drive, how would you be able to retrieve it if
something did mess up the Registry and the computer wouldn't boot up
properly? There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of discussion on
restoring it if something does happen.

Re: XP Control Panel program removal
bsquared,

I've never had the need to restore my computer from the backup's I've made.
But I assume that an emergency boot disk, your antivirus emergency start
program should be able to get you started and give you access to the *.reg
registry backup file to do a restore.

I use Norton Ghost to make once a month full system bacups and daily
incremental backups. When I've had problems I used Ghost to boot the machine.
( It's as if there's another operating system that runs from the Ghost disk.
And then I made restoration from the Ghost image. Acrontis and several others
have similar programs. Several people here seem to prefer Acrontis. (I use
Ghost because I've always used Ghost.)

Just be careful and you should be OK.

Perhaps someone with better knowledge can comment.

I know of several utilties that can help to delete the uninstall
entries in both the Registry and the Windows Installer

HiJackThis
Windows Installer Cleaner (from Microsoft)

You need to be careful during these removals
