lost ability to defrag
hello,
running windows xp sp2
auto updates loaded sp3 and after restart system was stuck in loop and
would not get past logo at startup. reinstalled windows using restore disc
(non- destructive) and went to windows update site and brought pc back up to
current drivers, internet, media player, etc --except for sp3--(still a
little scared till i back up files) everything seems ok xcept for a few
minor bugs with some programs i'll get to, however i now tried to defrag and
i get this message: " mmc cannot open the file C:\windows\system32\dfrg.msc.
this may be because the file does not exist, is not an mmc console, or was
created by a later version of mmc. this may also be because you do not have
sufficient access rights to file"

any suggestions? this is a new one for me.
thank you.
pete

Re: lost ability to defrag
you might try doing
a chkdsk, to run upon
reboot.

then you might try
defrag again either
in normal mode or
safemode.

Re: lost ability to defrag
the primary hurdle you have
is that you can not utilize your
sp2 cd to replace missing or
corrupt system files on your sp3
installation

--------------

however, here is some
fyi on a similar issue:

http://search.microsoft.com/results....tem32\dfrg.msc

and

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...%20defrag&ac=3

-------------
let us know if you
resolve the issue and
what method proved
useful or if you need
more help.

glad your up n running.

--------------

i don't think you need to amend what you have
already, unless you experience another
problem/issue or you are expanding
your skills.

however, i do recall that
you can also run via mmc:

services.msc
compmgmt.msc
devmgmt.msc

perhaps the above will help
you research the subject even
further.

-----------------

incidentally, you may want to
consider allotting time to
slipstream/build a winxp sp3 cd.

it will come in handy if you
need to do a repair install or
an sfc.

Re: lost ability to defrag

ok- i ran mmc.exe and added defrag to the console. my question is --the mmc
console had no file tree?? is that normal? i added defrag from the choices
and it works fine after i saved the new mmc file. i did not save as- i saved
and over wrote the existing because the damn thing was basically blank.
should i run mmc again and add the rest of the selections that are
available? should the tree be full?
thanks for the directions so far.

I'm glad you got your defrag back. If you have a DVD writer it should
be helpful to create a slipstreamed SP3 disk from your SP2 disk so
that you have SP3 in bootable form or run the system file checker
from. Slipstreaming is easy now that some good DIY tools are around.
Check this out
http://lifehacker.com/386526/slipstr...nstallation-cd

I used Nlite to slipstream my SP1 and SP2 disks (two systems) to SP3
quite easily in a couple of hours.

I'm glad you got your defrag back. If you have a DVD writer it should
be helpful to create a slipstreamed SP3 disk from your SP2 disk so
that you have SP3 in bootable form or run the system file checker
from. Slipstreaming is easy now that some good DIY tools are around.

I used Nlite to slipstream my SP1 and SP2 disks (two systems) to SP3
quite easily in a couple of hours.
