You need a router, and either wireless or cabling.
If you use wireless, keep in mind three things.
First, you must change the default SSID on the router. If you don't, you
may discover that a neighbor has a similar router, when Windows silently
decides to connect to *that one* instead. If you notice network
problems, such as an inability to send mail or to print to a shared printer,
check what it is you're connected to, first.
Second, you must set up some sort of encryption (such as WEP) on the router,
and on all the PCs. The choice is influenced by the capabilities of the
wireless cards on the PCs. For example, my current router is set to WEP2,
but my old Thinkpad's wireless card only supports WEP, so it can't connect
via wireless. Take the best that all cards support.
Third, there is a range issue. Wireless routers have a listed range of
around 300 feet, but this is heavily affected by the composition of walls
and floors. Metal and concrete can reduce the range significantly. You
may have to play with placement.
Finally, wireless isn't as fast as cable. For internet connections, this
isn't a concern, but if you are trying to network various computers to share
files, it will be slower.
Any system that can be connected with cable, should be.
