Palm backup

My computer is an Intel Macintosh. I have installed Parallels and
Windows XP in order to download Garmin maps. Recently, for reasons too
complicated to bother explaining, I had to install the Palm Desktop on
Windows and backup my Palm to it. This worked splendidly for months.
Suddenly, things changed; I get a failure to connect. Basically, I get a
message of failure, usually saying that the USB port is in use by
another application. The failure occurs both when I try to connect by
cable and when I try using Bluetooth.

I have checked the functioning of all Windows USB ports and get the
report that they are all functioning correctly. At the time that I
attempt this backup, the only application running on Windows is the Palm
Desktop.

Any ideas?
