Movie Maker closes when I try to add to Timeline
I'm running WMM 2.1 on XP

I've been making a home movie using jpg's and wma files, and everything was
fine. Now, when i try to add anything to the timeline, WMM just closes, with
no error message - it just goes away !!

I've experimented by setting up a new dummy project and dragging jpg's down
to the timeline. On the 22nd one, the same thing happened. I reopened the
project i'm working on and counted the items on the timeline, and it was
21...... so it would seem the 22nd item will always cause this to happen !!!

Any help would be appreciated

I do not have the exact cure but I can offer
some ideas...

Sounds like a system resource issue....
but if the 22nd picture that always causes
the crash is the "same" picture...it may be
a corrupted file...try a different one. If that's
not it...read on.....

Disconnect from the net and close all programs...
especially virus scanners before opening Movie
Maker.

Uninstall unused programs, delete files that are
no longer important. IOW...free up some space.

Increase the size of your Paging File...the
following article explains how.

Try doing some maintenance...Disk Cleanup,
Error Checking, Defrag...

Empty your Temporary Internet Files Folder.

Running Disk Cleanup, Error Checking and
Defrag on a regular schedule is a good idea.

(check the two boxes..."Automatically fix file
system errors" and "Scan for and attempt
recovery of bad sectors") the utility will run
the next time you restart your computer.
(run error checking repeatedly until it finds
no errors)

Try converting your .jpgs to Windows Bitmaps

Some users have reported problems
after installing IE7. If this applies to your
situation ...uninstalling IE7 may be worth
a try.

I've also seen a report that disabling the
ffdshow codec could be the fix. To accomplish
this...open Movie Maker and go to...Tools /
Options / Compatibility tab...Uncheck...
ffdshow / OK.

===
(You can disable ffdshow with this command:
regsvr32.exe /u "C:\Program Files\ffdshow\ffdshow.ax"
After running that command, the regular
DivX/XviD codecs will be used instead of ffdshow.
You can enable ffdshow again with this command:
regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files\ffdshow\ffdshow.ax" )
===

Re: Movie Maker closes when I try to add to Timeline
Thanks John.
I worked my way through your suggestions (defrag - clean-up etc), but
everything I tried still closed WMM on the 22nd item. Then I reached the last
suggestion which was disabling ffdshow in tools - options - compatibilty.....
and it worked !!!
Thanks for your valuable advice - Keith
