I'm told I must change type from DEFAULT (*.MSWMM)
to UDF
BUT
the drop down box will not let me change the type

do i do this from the control panel and if yes

Who told you that and why?
UDF universal disc format is a way of writing data to a disc, it won't work
in a dvd player.
