Access to printer denied

I have almost successfully set up my home network. I have a desktop running
XP Home and a laptop running Vista Home Premium. I have a printer connected
to the desktop that I would like to wirelessly access from the laptop. The
computers are both in the same work group, both computers have the Windows
Firewall configured to share files and printers, I have a Vista compatible
driver for the printer installed on the laptop, and all the other settings
seem to be correct. When I try to add the printer to the laptop, it is found
to exist on the network, but I get an error message indicating that access is
denied when I try to connect to it.

What am I missing?

You may want to add the printer as local printer first and then remap it as
network printer. This search result may help.

This is a known problem with Windows Vista. The most commonly used solution is
to setup a local port on the Vista system.

That seems to have gotten me one step closer. Now I'm getting a message from
the printer driver that there is a problem communicating with the printer. I
know that the printer is working fine with the desktop. Do I need to install
the Vista driver on the desktop (running XP) as well? If it makes a
difference the printer is a Lexmark.

The drivers certified for Windows XP should work fine on the computer running
XP. Did you get the latest updated drivers from Lexmark, for both computers?
