low or no connectivity

I am connected to the local network but at one statioin this is the message
(above). I can access shared files from other computers but the repair
wizard says that the server didn't assign an IP address to that station and,
when trying to renew the IP, it fails to do so.

There is No way to know unless you describe the topology and the components
of the Network in technical terms.

Unfortunately there is no real solution to that problem. Microsoft is aware
of the issue, but that does not help. My Vista machine is usless until they
come up with a fix.

With XP, we need to know if this network connection is wired or
wireless. If wireless, then you need to check the wireless network
access and access key (WEP or WPA)


If the wireless network is working correctly, or this is a wired
network adapter, you may need to rebuild the TCP/IP protocol. One
easy method is to download "winsockxpfix.exe" and place it on a USB
key to bring to the "defective" PC.

2. The link that you provided is a complain about a some what unusual use of
Wireless.
3. There are millions of Laptop out there in the world that are using Vista
and Wireless network connections, almost all of them work well.

1. We do not know if the OP is even using Vista.
2. The link that you provided is describing somewhat unusual use of Entry
Level Wireless.
3. As far as I know there are Millions of Laptops that were purchased over
the last year using Vista with Wireless Network Connection.
4. I have a laptop and few Desktops that are running Vista & Wireless
Internet/Network Connection very well too.

I tried the suggested solution but it didn't improve the connectivity or
allow the repair to continue (not being able to renew the IP address)

Any other suggestions?

NOT SURE IF MY REPLY WENT THROUGH (This is a repeat)

I did as you suggested but did not get the desired result. Still unable to
run a "repair" to the connection. The error reads unable to repair because
could not renew IP address...

Any other suggestions?

It is a simple hoe office network setup with 2 xp home computers and a
network printer. all attached to a small hub (no router, no internet).
Interesting note: computer, where connectivity is low, sees the network
computer as if it were attached directly to the other computer. In fact, it
is only connected to the network hub. I can access all shared files without
fail and print to the network printer (as if it were attached to other
computer) Nevertheless, the connectivity is low and appears to affect its
ability to run tax software as a workstation of the server (other computer)
The tax software was installed with help of its own tech support, however,
its inability to communicate through the network seems to be the issue.

1) the OP is XP Home.
2) the network connection is hard wired, NOT WIRELESS.
3) the PC's are desktops, not laptops
4) the hard wire travels through the walls in an office environment.
5) the existing hard wire worked last tax season.
