XP IIS 5.1, Multiple adapters, Static Internal IP, DUN Dynamic IP
Hi all,
My first post out of desperation of pulling hair out... hope to explain this
concisely for you...
I have recently reinstalled XP Pro, fortunately I had an image to cut down
some of the config. I am trying to ensure things are set up correctly before
making a fresh drive image.
I have two adapters installed, one 1394 + USB2 card and a NIC card, plus a
DUN connection for a mobile phone USB modem that I use my phone providers 3 /
3.5G dial up service. I also have IIS 5.1 now installed (plus SMTP server)
which I have locked down and URLScan configured.
My ISP allocates an IP (WAN IP?) to the dial-up connection, this is dynamic
as it changes each time I connect to the internet which is fine. Although I
have IIS, this is for local development not serving to the WWW. The 1394
adapter is connected to the phone via USB.
What IP should I assign to IIS Default Web Site / SMTP Server?
I thought this should be in the realm of 192.168.1.x but when I do this on
IIS I cant reach the site from entering that IP into IE. I also thought I
should assign an IP like this so that I can lock down SMTP to only allow
connections from my local network IP range? At the moment I can get my SATA
RAID controller to send notification emails via my SMTP server, but I cant
get ESET NOD32 Antivirus or Acronis True Image to also utilise the same
settings?
Should I have my 1394 card set to obtain an IP address automatically and
should this be bridged to my NIC card?
I understand entering a static IP address as far as the 192.168.1.x and the
subnet but what should I enter for the default gateway and dns servers?
At a later date am thinking of having a wireless router connected so that I
can connect laptop to transfer web development to IIS.
Hope I've provided enough info, any help greatly appreciated.
