Access between workgroups

We have a small peer-to-peer network at work, about 16 PCs, a mixture of
Windows XP Pro, XP Home, 1 W2K Pro, and a couple of Win98 machines. I want
to use my personal laptop, which is part of my home peer-to-peer network to
access a folder on a Windows XP Pro PC that has simple file sharing turned
off. I have the same logon id and password on both my laptop and desktop,
and when I try to access the desired folder from my work desktop there's no
problem. When I try to access the same pc from my laptop I can see all the
shared resources on the desktop, but I can't acutally access them. I
suspect I could probably solve this problem simply by changing my laptop's
workgroup to my office's workgroup but I would rather not do that. Does
anyone know of any other solution to this problem? Perhaps there's some
setting I can tweak on the XP Pro machine? Any help would be greatly
appriciated.

It is Not an issue with your Laptop.
The Network has to set to accept the Laptop.
The person in charge of the Network should help you.

I am the person in charge of the network. I didn't think it was so much a
laptop issue as a permissions issue on the XP Pro machine. The trouble is I
don't know how to tweak the settings to allow access.

A computer in any workgroup can access a computer in any workgroup.
There are no permissions that apply to workgroups.

It's possible that a firewall program on one of the computers is
blocking access.

What exactly happens when you try to access an XP Pro PC folder from
your laptop? How are you trying to access it, and what does the error
message say?

Another point, the Home machines will be limited to five inbound file-share
connections, the Pro ones to ten. In fact, the only computers which could act
as a 'server' to a 16-user LAN are the Win98 ones. This may be why an extra
user cannot connect.
