Various network problems

I can't get two computers (DELL - XP Pro and GATEWAY- XP home), connected by
a netgear WGR614 router - by wired connections - to communicate quickly
enough. It takes ages to open/save/copy files between these machines. And
when I try to copy 2 .5 GB it tells me to go on holiday and come back in a
week's time! (It also fails after half an hour or so.) Also my 2Mbps internet
connection runs between 900 - 1900kbps on DELL and 22 -126 kbps on GATEWAY.

PingPlotter shows the Gateway loses 30% of packets when pinging dell. Dell
loses 10 - 30 % the pinging Gateway. Sometimes 100% loss when pingPlotting
each other!

Both comps show themselves and the other in 'view workgroup comps'.

I have tried mapping drives and that works quicker than waiting 40 secs for
each mouse click to register when browsing the other machine but there is
sometimes still a 10sec delay and if I try to open even 2 word docs at once
it'll often show 'not responding'

That's the prob, here's what I've tried...

Enabling NetBios on both machines
changing switch / router
changing ethernet cables
Tried a spare network card on both machines with no improvement
Made sure the following services were started and automatic: Computer
Browser, Client, Server, DHCP client, Windows firewall / ICS .... as well as
remote registry in the DELL (the XP pro machine)
Client for microsoft networks, File and printer sharing for microsoft
networks and Internet Protocol TCP/IP are all being used
I have tried setting the NICs to all possible combinations of 10/100 half
and full duplex
I have removed a 'ticking hard drive' on GATEWAY, installed a new hard disc,
re-installed XP home and setup as above again.
I have also tried disabling/switching off windows firewall and sygate
personal firewall has been at both off and set to allow others to share and
to browse / write my files on Network Places

A first step could be to bring in a third computer temporarily
to find out which of the two existing computers has the problem.

I stumbled over Sygate---I would uninstall that, unless you have
a very good reason to leave it in place. What's its current
purpose?

Thanks Jack, but no cigar. I downloaded and tuned my pcs with drTCP - no
improvement. Interestingly enough DELL download window settled down to 30MB/s
whereas GATEWAY averaged out at 5.65MB/s. Does this show my problem? Could it
be a dodgy NIC on gateway afterall?

Does the ipconfig and browstat info look okay?

Would appreciate your continued assistance if you have a mo'.

hear is a fairly respected prog - should I try uninstalling that?

My main problem really is the slow browsing of the network and copying files
(and in particular copying files larger than a couple of MB - the network
name is no longer available.... but when I try to browser the other
computer's shared folders they are available but with 10s delays). And
downloading a 10MB file from net today took at least 30mins on DELL but
timed out on GATEWAY.

In my Network Places : DELL shows only GATEWAYS shared folders, and GATEWAY
shows all.

Check to see if:

1) Dell is on the same network workgroup as the Gateway.

2) Disable all "firewall" softwares temporary so as to test.

3) User accounts for both PCs may need to be created on both

4) Check UPNP status on both

fast on my LAN but now both computers Internet speed is crawling. Any
suggestions?

Check:

1) Network setting and you may want to uncheck the "QoS Packet
Scheduler." This is an Interent traffic shaping system which may not
be used by your network router.

2) Check all anti-virus systems for Internet worm module. This works
just like a firewall.

3) You may want to turn off TCP/IP version 6. Your network may not

Scanning as I type but I believe they're clean

Not installed.

Normally my cable modem plugs into my router WGR614 and the Dell and Gateway
plug into that. When connected directly to the modem the dell works but still
at dial up speed (should be up to 2Mbps); the gateway on the otherhand
doesn't work at all. It tries for 40s or so acquire an address then I get a
limited connectivity message. When I click this it explains that "this
problem occurred because the network did not assign a network address to the
computer".

Think I got it working now after releasing and renewing my ip address on
GATEWAY and rebooting my router.
