No LAN icon??

Hello

We have more than 3000 users on our institute's network and part of my job
is to troubleshoot network connection problems.

I have today come across one I have not seen before: a user has brought her
laptop to be configured to our network so that she can access the Internet,
etc.

However, in her Internet Connections dialogue box there is no LAN icon or
settings for me to configure! (She did have dial-up which she used on her
home network), but I need to configure her account (DNS settings, etc through
this missing LAN Connections dialogue box).

What can I do to resolve this, please?

I'm guessing that this laptop actually has an ethernet port, is that correct? If
you open Device Manager, odds are you'll see a yellow exclamation point next to
the network adapter for this computer. Check the manufacturer's web site for the
latest drivers.

Note: You can access Device Manager by going to Start -> Run and entering
devmgmt.msc in the Open box. Click OK. It's also accessible through Control
Panel -> System -> Hardware tab -> Device Manger button.

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, there wasn't a network card installed. I was a bit confused because she
said there was no room for a card and in Device Manager she read something to
me about a PCMCIA card. She said this was in Device Manager but it was not
under the Network Adapter icon. It was all a bit confusing.
