Windows XP DHCP does not work
I've been seeing a problem lately on many systems in our repair shop
where DHCP does not work on Windows XP computers. This happends on
wired and wireless connections. It seems like it may be related to
PPOE clients that are installed by internet services like AT&T.

I can usually solve these issues by re-installing windows or using a
static IP address. Could there be another solution to these problems?
Is there a way of re-setting the networking to windows defaults?

RE: Windows XP DHCP does not work
My thoughts (if you can't find any relvent info) is to run a test with
InstallRite to see what changes the AT&T software actually makes. This may
give you a better idea where the problem lies.

Anoter useful tool might be LSPFix, which can identify any 'impostor' TCP/IP
stack components.

When plugging in those same computers to a basic router of any sort
that runs DHCP, do you have the same issues?

Is the DHCP Client Service running?

Start->Run->services.msc
Find "DHCP Client".
Make sure Status is "Started" and Startup Type is "Automatic".

Re: Windows XP DHCP does not work
Basically I just get a 169.xxx IP address from the DHCP server. The
DHCP service is running.

I had a system with these symptoms last week, and I was able to solve
the issue by removing the "winsock" and "winsock2" entries in the
registry, and then removing and re-installing TCP/IP on the network
adapters.
