I've just installed the new relevant ZoneAlarm version 7.0.483.000,
and the outstanding MIcrosoft updates.
Everything seems to be working ok so far. Thanks to ZoneAlarm for
their swift action.

RE: Update KB951748 causes no connect to internet, anyone have this?
I am a victim of the KB951748 problem. By the time it was narrowed down to
that instead of a passing connection or hardware problem, my ability to
access anything had been killed.

Probing through the Event Viewer/System file I found that either registry
entries are missing, dll's missing, or both.

How do I recover from this without having to do a complete renstall of XP
SP-3 which, with all of its necessary stuff, amounts to 20-30 hours of work.
That, on top of about 25 hours of troubleshooting the problem so far.

Is there any way to reinstall the networking software, either from the
recovery partition, a CD, or using a distributable copy of the necessary
software?

Dick T,
Do you use Zone Alarm? If yes, there is a conflict with that update and some
versions of ZA.

1. Either uninstall the Update from the Control Panel> Add/Remove Programs.
2. Or run the System Restore feature, from the Start Menu, through the Help
interface.

Once you get your internet working, go to the Zone Alarm website and read
the fix they offer. I believe you need to download and install a different
version of Zone Alarm on your PC.

Re: Update KB951748 causes no connect to internet, anyone have thi
I've done all that and more. Tried the new & improved ZA after a clean
uninstall: Didn't help. Took off ZA and all of its traces: No help. Didn't
begin looking through Events Viewer listings until I had run out of all
reasons for the problem. That's when I found indications of missing dll's or
registry entries or files (all listed as possibilities).

In retrospect I realize now that the problem began immediately after
downloading the Msft updates. Began with losing access to the modem, then
some blips in reaching the router.

That took me into the usual rundown of first checking access with another
computer (good), then suspecting cables, ethernet card, etc, etc. And, into
endless rounds of checking every detail of settings in every possible bit of
access software to see if anything got messed up by accident or otherwise:
All good. That took me from about noon on Thursday to near midnight.

Friday morning (about 4:30 a.m.) began again. And again on Saturday.

It was either late Thursday night or early Fri morning when I learned from
Msft & ZA sites of the nature of the problem. Have been trying every
possible way to avoid a reinstall of XP ever since - including pouring
through several massive (ie 1,200 pages plus) Msft books on XP and what goes
on under its hood.
