URGENT Help pls: XP fresh install will not re-connect to the domain properly

Hi Folks. Excuse the long post, I hope an MVP with patience can read
this through, since I have to return to this site only once with the
solution in hand, tomorrow! IE, they need it to work tomorrow, no matter
what. Thanks in advance.

_*The_Nuts_and_Bolts_problem:*_

-_Part_1:_ On changing "Computer name" to join the domain "Audit"
(instead of being on a make-believe workgroup) with the computer name
set to "EM" (as it is on the server) It clears that stage so mission
successful on part 1...

_Part_2:_ It will then offer the username and password box, and no
matter whose we use, even the domain Administrator, the error received
is along the lines of "user and / or password not recognised on this
server" ladida-

_ALTERNATIVELY_

-_Part_1:_ On changing "Computer name" to join the domain "Audit"
(instead of being on a make-believe workgroup) with the computer name
set to *ANYTHING OTHER THAN *"EM" OR ANYTHING OTHER THAN WHAT IS LISTED
ON THE SERVER AS A "COMPUTER" It clears that stage so mission also
successful on part 1...

_pART_2:_ It will then offer the username and password box, and if we
use the domain administrator account it will welcome us to the domain.
The computer reboots, logs on with the user, and the computer can be
seen by other clients. But when they click on the computer called "EM"
they get "Access denied, computer not trusted by the domain server" or
words close to that affect-

_FAIRLY_IMPORTANT_EXTRA_INFO:_ (ADDED AT RANDOM)

* THE SERVER IS WINDOWS SERVER 2000 (AD)

* THIS IS CLIENT NUMBER 5 OF 5. ALL OTHER 4 COMPUTERS CONTINUE TO WORK
FINE. ALL 5 CAN ACCESS THE WEB FINE. ALL 5 COMPUTERS RUN SOFTWARE THAT
NEEDS A DEDICATED SERVER/CLIENT RELATIONSHIP NETWORK.

HOWEVER, COMPUTER/CLIENT 5 (CALLED \"EM\") STORES FILES ON IT LOCALLY
THAT COMPUTER/CLIENT 1 (CALLED \"KS\") REQUIRES ACCESS TO. THESE FILES
ARE STORED ON EM IN THE _SHARED_FOLDER_. THE FOLDER HAS BEEN SHARED, AND
EM CAN SEE THE SHARE ON ITSELF. NO OTHER CLIENT CAN SEE THE SHARE
BECAUSE THEY ALL GET THE SAME ERROR AS MENTIONED AT THE END OF \"THE
NUTS AND BOLTS PROBLEM.\"

* I HAVE TRIED CHANGING THE COMPMUTER NAME TO VARIOUS THINGS AND
REBOOTING AS A WORKGROUP AND TRY CONNECTING TO THE DOMAIN LIKE THIS.
SAME THING AS AT THE END OF THE NUTS AND BOLTS PROBLEM.

* I HAVE TRIED CREATING A NEW COMPUTER ON THE SERVER \"EM2\", RENAMING
THE CLIENT TO THAT AND STILL GET THE SAME ERROR AS LISTED IN THE NUTS
AND BOLTS/MAIN PROBLEM ABOVE.

* *TURNING TO THE SERVER FOR A SECOND: * IT TURNS OUT THAT THE
ANTIVIRUS IS OUT OF DATE BY A MONTH OR TWO. REASON IS, THE SERVER CANNOT
CONNECT TO THE INTERNET, BUT IT DOES TO THE ROUTER'S WEB MANAGEMENT
SCREEN. IP IS STATICLY ASSIGNED AND THE DNS WAS SET TO 127.0.0.1 (DUNNO
WHY) AND I ADDED THE ISP'S DNS AS PER THE ROUTER'S WEB MANAGEMENT -
PRIMARY AND SECONDARY DNS - TO NO AVAIL. THE SERVER USED TO HAVE
INTERNET ACCESS UNTIL ABOUT A MONTH OR TWO AGO. IT MAY BE IN CONJUSTION
WITH THE INSTALLATION OF AVG FOR SERVERS. I DON'T KNOW FOR SURE THOUGH.
*ANY IDEAS ON THIS ONE ANYONE?* I HAVE TO BE CAREFUL SINCE THERE ARE 4
PEOPLE LOGGED ON AND USING THE CONNECTION TO THE SERVER. I CANNOT ACT
WITHOUT MAKING SURE IT'S GOING TO CONTINUE TO WORK AS A SERVER WITH NO
DOWNTIME. MAYBE I CAN MANAGE THE TIME FOR ONE REBOOT, BUT I CANNOT TAKE
RISKS WITH TEH PARTNERS OF THE COMPANY WATCHING VERY CLOSELY - I'M SURE
THE READER APPRECIATES WHERE I'M COMING FROM HERE.

* ON THE SERVER, IF I DOUBLE CLICK THE COMPUTER ACCOUNT \"EM\" IT DOES
NOT HAVE A DNS SUFFIX LIKE ALL THE OTHERS.

* ON THE SERVER, I ONCE HAD TO DELETE THE COMPUTER ACCOUNT EM AS ITS
CONTENTS WHEN DOUBLE CLICKED LOOKED NOTHING LIKE THE REST OR NORMAL,
AND IT WAS UNABLE TO RESET AND UNABLE TO \"ENABLE\" SO I DELETED IT ONCE
CLIENT 5 WAS RUNNING AS THOUGH ON A WORKGROUP, THEN I RECREATED COMPUTER
ACCOUNT \"EM\" TO NO AVAIL.

_INTERESTING_INFORMATION/HISTORY_TO_THE_PROBLEM_

The computer called EM (as solely used by a respected manager) was used
in his absence by a wannabe manageress who is currently second in
command to him. She thought he was withholding information from her and
proceeded to open his private email witout permission...! Since he
travels a lot she opened an email entitled "Travel Itinery" and just to
add insult to injury proceeded to open a link to an EXE file. The
computer got many screens informing her that there were 85 million
problems, click this link to fix them all etc etc etc. Needless to say,
the computer obtained a virus... one reboot request and it was dead
forever. Yours truly gets a call, I grab what I can off the HDD and dump
the partition, reinstall XP, update drivers and install SP3. Installed
AVG, Connect to the domain.... or not...

This is all at the end of a mind boggling day, it was getting late and
the key holder wanted to go home. Perhaps pressure and tiredness has
prevented me from seeing/trying the obvious. I did not go there for this
but suddenly all of this is my responsability. When things don't go
normally or as planned, that's when experience/knowledge comes to hand,
and obviosly i need help since I haven't blinked at a domain for years,
unfortunately, ... erm... or fortunately...

THIS IS URGENT SINCE I'M DUE TO RETURN THERE TOMORROW. PLEASE DO NOT
ASK ME TO GO AND TRY X AND COME BACK WITH A RESPONSE FOR EVERYONE HERE,
SINCE WHEN I GO BACK, I HAVE TO HAVE THE CLIENT \"EM\" ON THE DOMAIN AND
ACCESSIBLE BY THE DOMAIN USERS.

I know this will be obvious and easy for you guys, that's why I'm
asking here!

Whoa, dude... that is a Russian novel. I appreciate the level of detail, but
note that most people lose patience with lengthy tomes in newsgroups and
ignore them. Additionally, the CAPS LOCK problem you're experiencing will
put off many who think you're shouting, not to mention those of us who find
it very difficult to read. I personally skipped most of it as my eyes hurt
while trying!

Here's my suggestion for the problem workstation, and forgive me if I'm
mentioning something you did.

Firstly, since they're the ones who bolloxed it up, tell them to chill out
and stop breathing down your neck.
Then disjoin the domain.
Delete the computer account "EM" in ADUC.
Name the computer something else entirely while it's in a workgroup (how
about "FLUFFY"?) & reboot once to make it stick.
Log in as local admin. Join the domain and *still* don't change the name.
Reboot.
See if everything works. If it does, you can then rename the PC to "EM"
while logged in as an account with sufficient domain permissions. Reboot.
It should now be EM and let domain users log in..

Your numerous server issues should really be written up in another post
(without the caps, please!) and submitted to
microsoft.public.windows.server.networking with a bit more info such as
ipconfig /all output & whehter you can ping out by IP, name, whatnot.

Keep it concise & you'll get a lot more help in here...promise.
