"Limited or No Connectivty" error
All of a sudden my Dell Dimension running XP media edition keeps getting a
"limited or no connectivity" error when I try to get online. Worked one day,
not the next. I worked with Dell tech support and they assure me the network
adapter (Intel Gigabit) is functioning fine. I get a flashing orange and
green light on the PC but a solid green on the hub. I route through a hub to
a router to a cable modem (Comcast). I've tried all hub ports and none work,
though other computers can get online fine using the same hub ports. I have
replaced both the router and the cable modem but still the same problem.
When I check with ipconfig I see that no DNS is assigned and the IP addresses
and gateway addresses are bad (169.254.26.199).

It seems something (in Windows??) is blocking the assignment of a correct
DNS and IP address.

Any ideas???? Dell's last resort was to wipe the hard driver and reinstall
Windows!

Re: "Limited or No Connectivty" error
Have you tried a system restore back to a point when it was working
properly?

Re: "Limited or No Connectivty" error
No luck - restored to a day I know it worked and this the same problem. Also
"flushed" the DNS (per instructions in another post) and that did not work.
Also, when I do ipconfig /release afterward I can't renew. Not sure what
that means.

A couple of things to try:

1) Try a different cable.

2) Make sure that your DHCP Client Service is running:
Start->Run->Services.msc
Find "DHCP Client". Make sure Status is "Started" and "Startup Type"
is "Automatic". If not, right-click on it and set it this way.

3) Sometimes the network adapter does not sense the line correctly.
Start->Run->devmgmt.msc
Double-click your network adapter device
"Advanced" Tab.
Property: "Speed & Duplex" (or similar)
Usually this is set to "Auto". Try forcing it to the speed and
duplex of your Hub. (Usually "Hub" devices are Half-Duplex and
Switches/Routers are Full-Duplex).

HTH,
John

Re: "Limited or No Connectivty" error
Well, so much for two hours on the phone with Dell in the first place
confirming the network adapter was working. None of John suggestions worked
so I went to RadioShack and bought a new $20 network adapter card - and -
everything works. Hardware problem all along.

Thanks for everyone's support.
